When we are growing up as young boys and girls, we all have dream jobs that we’d like to do when we are older.
As young kids boys, dream of being superheroes or firemen, girls dream of being princesses.
In our teenage years, the ideas change slightly; boys want to play sport – mainly football – and girls want to be models or musicians.
Then towards our late teenage years, things become more realistic – we want jobs like nurses, chefs, physiotherapists, for example.
And there are people that want to go into trade work; electricians, builders and plumbers in Bishops Stortford and all over the UK.
This is because people need good, reliable jobs to pay their bills etc.
There will always be a need for people to work in the trade industry – houses and buildings will always need electricians to fix their lights and wiring, builders to construct these buildings and plumbers will always be required as long as people keep using the toilet and using showers, baths and sinks.
Here we will talk you through some things you need to know if you are considering a career in the plumbing industry.
Residential or commercial
There are two different types of plumbing you can get involved in – either residential or commercial.
Residential plumbing is when you will work in people’s homes, which will bring a variety of work you will do and people you will meet.
Commercial plumbing is when you will be doing larger (and much longer) jobs, such as doing the work on new build homes.
You can’t be claustrophobic or afraid of heights
A lot of plumbing work takes place in small cabinets, cupboards and crawl holes; basically in a lot of small spaces.
Also, drainage work needs to be carried out, which means ladder work is essential, so being scared of being high up is not an option.
A strong stomach is required
As you can imagine, working with toilets, sewers and drains can be quite disgusting at times. You will see and smell some awful things, so always be prepared for the worst.
Career advancement can be quick
There are a few steps you need to go through to get from apprentice to fully qualified master plumber, but these steps can be done in a short space of time. Also, the pay you receive can be very rewarding.
Please keep these things in mind when you are deciding on future employment – plumbing is an extremely satisfying job and you will enjoy every minute of it, if it is the career path you want to take.
